The date starts at character six
For the supported layout, count four digits and one letter first. The next two digits are the year, the next character is the month and the next two digits are the day. In 7414C14X1771143, the date field is 14X17: October 17, 2014.
January through September use digits 1–9. October, November and December use X, Y and Z. The remaining digits are a production sequence, not an additional date.
What confirms the rule?
The CPSC’s Navien recall notice explains the embedded year/month/day field and October’s X code. Building Intelligence Center and the Fast Water Heater service team document the same positions and all three letter months. This tool checks actual calendar days, so February 30 cannot become a manufacture date.
Earlier serials and newer product families
Some early units print a four-digit year between dashes, for example 9262-20081208-1027. They are outside this decoder’s current coverage. Read a printed production date or ask Navien with the full model and serial. The NWP heat-pump tank is also outside the supported tankless layout.
Common questions
Why is the first number not the year?
The first four positions belong to a product identifier. Reading them as a year can produce a plausible-looking but wrong answer.
Does a decoded serial confirm warranty or recall status?
No. Use Navien’s registration lookup for registration and the linked CPSC notice for its precise model and fuel-conversion criteria. A manufacture date alone does not establish eligibility.
Where should I look?
Use the side label or original packaging. You do not need to open a powered appliance to use this tool.
