Suzuki outboard year lookup

Suzuki put the model year at the end of the model designation up to 2010, and its last digit at the start of the serial. Enter one or both.

Starts with DT or DF.

The 6 digits after the dash, with or without the prefix.

Where to look: ID plate on the clamp bracket: the model designation (e.g. DF140TL) at the top, then a 5-digit prefix and a 6-digit serial.

Try an example:

Model year of this outboard

Enter the numbers from the plate on the motor’s bracket.

How to read a Suzuki model designation

The ID plate on the clamp bracket shows the model designation on top, such as DF50TLX [1]:

DT 40 C R S N → 2-stroke, 40 HP, oil injection, remote, 15″ shaft, N = 1992

Year letters, 1977–2000

For 1982–1988 Suzuki’s year codes have two letters (VZ, QD, VE…), but the first letter is left out of the model designation [1]. That makes D, F, G and J each stand for two years.

K1–K9 come from Suzuki’s bulletin [1]; L0 = 2010 from two parts sellers [3][4]. Suzuki dropped the year code after that, so a newer designation such as DF140ATL ends with the shaft length [3].

The serial number: first digit = last digit of the year

The plate’s serial has a 5-digit prefix (the model) and 6 digits. From 1980 the first of the 6 digits is the last digit of the model year [1]. A dealer’s DF140 table shows the same pattern through 2025, for example 2014 serials starting 41… and 2020 serials starting 04… [5]. Before 1980 that position held a letter: C = 1977, D = 1978, F = 1979 (Suzuki’s rule only).

One digit repeats every ten years, so the decoder lists every decade. Enter the model designation as well and it keeps only the years both agree on: DF140TLK4 with serial 14001F-421001 gives 2004. If the two disagree, it shows both and says so.

Common questions

How do I tell what year my Suzuki outboard is?

Read the last letter (or K + digit) of the model designation on the plate, then check it against the first digit of the serial. Together they usually give one year.

Where is the serial number on a Suzuki outboard?

On the plate on the clamp bracket [1]. It is also stamped on the engine block [3].

My Suzuki model ends in L or X. Is that the year?

On a pre-2001 designation the last letter is the year (L = 1990, X = 1999). On models from about 2011 on it’s the shaft length. Add the serial: if the two don’t agree, the letter is a shaft length.

Not affiliated with Suzuki. The brand name is used only to say which numbers this decoder reads.
