How Mercury serial numbers give the year
Mercury doesn’t write the year into the serial. Instead it published the first serial number of each model year, separately for each horsepower and model [1][5]. Your motor belongs to the year whose range its serial falls in. That’s why the decoder needs the horsepower: the same number can be a 1986 on one motor and a 1992 on another.
- Up to about 1985: plain 7-digit numbers, such as
4314385. - From about 1986: a letter and 6 digits, such as
D182000. The tag often shows a leading 0 (0D182000); it’s only a placeholder and doesn’t matter [5]. - 1997 and newer: Mercury did not publish model-year ranges [5], so the decoder can’t date these. Newer serial stickers usually print the model year.
First serial of each model year (selected horsepowers)
Generated from the same data the decoder uses (US serial ranges). Where a horsepower had several models, the lowest starting number is shown; the decoder checks every model’s range. Blank means no row starts that year.

Worked examples
| Horsepower and serial | Model year | From |
|---|---|---|
| 50 HP, 0D182000 | 1993 | Mastertech Marine (maxrules.com) |
| 275 HP, C221500 | 1990 | Mercury Outboards (copy hosted by Inland Marine) |
| 7.5 HP, 4314385 | 1976 | Mastertech Marine (maxrules.com) |
| 40 HP, G125005 | 1995 | Mastertech Marine (maxrules.com) |
| 175 HP, C221500 | 1989–1991 | Mastertech Marine (maxrules.com) |
Without the horsepower, 4314385 fits 1965–1985, because every horsepower’s ranges are searched. The 175 HP example shows three years because the chart gives one range for a counter-rotation model that runs up to the next listed year; the years in between are shown rather than guessed.
How the tables were checked
- Year-by-year ranges come from Mastertech Marine’s per-horsepower charts (1963–1996)[4][6].
- Up to 1992 they were checked against a scan of Mercury’s own starting-serial chart from August 1991: 477 starting serials read from it fall in a Mastertech range with the same year [1].
- For 1993–1996, every starting serial falls inside a window of Mercury’s model index that includes the same year[10].
- A few chart rows had obvious typos (an end number lower than the start, or a 4 HP 1974 range ending at 9,200,000). Those were corrected from Mercury’s model index or chart, or left out.
When the answer says “or a later year”
The last rows in the charts give only a starting serial (“and up”) for 1996. A serial above it is a 1996 motor or a later one, and Mercury published nothing to tell them apart [5]. The decoder says so.
What this page doesn’t decode
- 1997 and newer Mercury outboards: Mercury did not publish model-year ranges after 1996 (Mastertech Marine). Newer serial stickers usually print the year.
- Serial prefix “eras” such as 0G = 1994–1999 or a letter = year: Published by some sites without sources, and they contradict Mercury’s own chart (for example D000750 is the first 1991 serial, not 1983 or 1986–89).
- Mercury motors under 4 HP and Mariner-badged motors: Not in the per-horsepower tables used here.
Common questions
Where is the serial number on a Mercury outboard?
On the ID tag on the clamp (transom) bracket. The horsepower is on the cowling decal.
What does the 0 at the start of a Mercury serial mean?
Nothing: it’s a placeholder. 0D182000 is looked up as D182000 [5].
Does the letter in a Mercury serial number tell the year?
No. Some sites publish letter-to-year lists, but Mercury’s chart contradicts them: D000750 is the first 1991 serial for most motors, and D082000 the first 1992 [1].
How do I date a Mercury from 1997 or later?
Check the serial sticker for a printed model year, or ask a Mercury dealer to look the serial up.
Not affiliated with Mercury Marine. The brand name is used only to say which serials this decoder reads.
