Trane and American Standard furnace and AC age

Trane and American Standard have changed serial styles several times. The decoder tries every era’s format and shows each reading that fits.

Spaces and dashes don’t matter.

Where to look: Rating plate on the cabinet; newer plates often print the manufacture date too.

Trane serial number styles by era

The length of the serial and its first character tell you which style you have [1][2].

YearsLooks likeHow to read it
2010 on10 characters, starts with 4 digits: 130313596LDigits 1–2 = year, 3–4 = week (week 3 of 2013)
2002–20099 characters, starts with 3 digits: 81422S41GDigit 1 = last digit of the year, 2–3 = week (week 14 of 2008)
1983–20019 characters, starts with a letter + 2 digits: J1828DWCDLetter = year (table below), 2 digits = week (week 18 of 1994)
1970s–1990sLetter, 2 digits, letter, 5 digits: C94L14723Factory letter, 2-digit year, month letter A–M (November 1994)

The last style has medium confidence: both sources describe the layout, but only PickHVAC prints the month letters[2]. They follow the common A = January … M = December table without I.

Year letters, 1983–2001

A, I, O and Q aren’t used. For two letters the charts disagree: the Building Intelligence Center and an inspector’s chart give S = 1986 and Z = 2001 [1][3], while PickHVAC has them the other way round[2]. The decoder shows both years for S and Z and says which source gives which.

Where to find the serial number

On the rating plate on the cabinet. Many newer plates also print the manufacture date, which saves decoding. American Standard units use the same plates and serial styles.

What this page doesn’t decode

Single-letter styles from 1980–1982 and hyphenated 1970s serials such as 5A-2294 or K77-74592. The sources disagree on these, or only one describes them.

Common questions

How do I tell how old my Trane unit is?

Count the characters. Ten characters starting with four digits: the first two are the year. Nine characters starting with three digits: the first digit is the year in the 2000s. Nine starting with a letter: look the letter up in the table above.

Why does the decoder show 1986 and 2001 for my serial?

Your serial starts with S or Z, the two letters the published charts disagree on. The unit’s condition usually makes the answer obvious.

Can a 9-character serial be from both 2008 and 1998?

No. The 2002–2009 style starts with a digit and the 1983–2001 style with a letter, so the first character settles the era.

Not affiliated with Trane or American Standard. Brand names are used only to say which serials this decoder reads.
