How long are goats pregnant?
About 150 days from breeding to kidding [3][7]. Normal pregnancies run from about 147 to 155 days [7][5], so a doe can kid several days either side of the average date. The calculator shows that whole range.
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| Merck Vet Manual [3] | Average 150 days |
| Alabama Extension [7] | 150 days; kidding usually 147–155 days after conception |
| Penn State Extension [5] | 148–152 days |
Worked example: one doe
A doe bred on October 16, 2026 is due on March 15, 2027 (150 days). The earliest normal date isMarch 12, 2027 (147 days) and the latest March 20, 2027 (155 days).
Alabama Extension’s kidding table counts 148 days [7], so its dates fall two days before the average used here. Both sit inside the published range.
Kidding window for a herd
When a buck runs with the does, you rarely know each breeding date. Producers often leave him in for two or three heat cycles [3], and a goat’s cycle is about 21 days [3][7]. Enter the day the buck went in and the day he came out.
For a buck in from September 1, 2026 to October 13, 2026 (two cycles), the average kidding dates run fromJanuary 29, 2027 to March 12, 2027, and kids could arrive anywhere from January 26, 2027 to March 17, 2027.
Is my goat pregnant? Test and scan windows
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Day 18–24 | Watch for a return to heat. A doe that isn’t pregnant usually comes back into heat one cycle (about 18–24 days) after breeding. [7][6][4] |
| Day 25 | Blood pregnancy test possible. Pregnancy-protein blood tests are reliable from about 25 days after breeding. [4][6] |
| Day 30–45 | Ultrasound through the belly. Can show a pregnancy from about day 30; most accurate after about day 45. [4][6][7] |
| Day 45–85 | Count kids by ultrasound. Scans are most accurate after about day 45, and counts are most accurate up to about day 85. [4][6] |
- No return to heat. A doe that isn’t bred usually shows heat again after one cycle, 18–24 days after breeding [7][6][4]. Some open does don’t show it clearly, so this is a hint rather than proof.
- Blood tests measure proteins made by the placenta and are reliable from about day 25[4][6]. A doe that lost a pregnancy in the past two weeks or so can still test positive [4].
- Ultrasound through the belly finds a pregnancy from about day 30 and is most accurate after day 45; the count of kids is most accurate up to about day 85 [4][6]. A rectal probe can work from about day 20 [4][6].
Common questions
How many months is a goat pregnant?
About five months: 150 days is just under 5 months on the calendar [7].
Can goats get pregnant at any time of year?
Most goats are seasonal breeders, cycling from early autumn to late winter [2]. In Alabama, for example, the breeding season runs from August through December [7]. Some breeds cycle over a longer season [3].
Do Nigerian Dwarf or Pygmy goats have a shorter gestation?
The extension and veterinary sources used here give one figure for all goats. We didn’t find two independent published figures for a separate miniature-breed length, so the calculator uses the same 147–155 day range. If your breed association gives its own figure, compare it with the range shown.
What if my doe goes past 155 days?
Check the breeding date first. If the buck was in with the herd, she may have been bred later than you think. A doe still pregnant well past the latest published date is worth a call to your vet.
These dates are planning estimates from published averages, not veterinary advice. Your vet can confirm a pregnancy and the number of kids.
